The Real Test of Leadership
The real test of leadership is not simply growing a business. It is preparing that business for a future you may not personally control.
Some business leaders begin with an idea and spend their careers trying to turn it into a viable enterprise. Others inherit an established platform and face a different challenge: protecting what already works while preparing it for a future that may look very different from the past.
The second responsibility is often underestimated.
An established business carries assets that cannot easily be recreated: a reputation built over decades, established customer relationships, operational knowledge, supplier networks, accumulated experience and a place in the market. These strengths provide a competitive advantage, but they can also create pressure to preserve familiar ways of working even when the market is changing.
The challenge is to respect the past without becoming trapped by it.
This is an important lens through which to examine Darshan Chandaria, Group CEO and shareholder of Chandaria Group, and the wider business legacy associated with one of East Africa’s established industrial enterprises.
